The principal treatment in obesity is reduced calorie intake.
The patient should be made to understand that, obesity is caused by consumption of excess calorie than that required to meet the calorie needs, lack of exercise or physical work is a contributory cause to the development of obesity and there is no ‘slimming diet’ which does not depend on low calorie intake.
A diet survey will reveal the pattern of meals and the items of foods usually consumed by the obese subject which should be avoided.

The aim of reduced calorie intake is to produce a calorie deficit in the body which will result in the fat stored in the adipose tissue being used to meet the calorie needs.
It has been observed in obese adults, a diet providing 1,000 Kcal, about half the daily requirements of persons leading sedentary lives, will help to reduce the body weight by 1 to 1.5 kg a week.
Consumption of a diet providing 1330 Kcal may help to reduce about 0.5 to 1 kg a week. The reducing diets should provide adequate amounts of proteins, vitamins and minerals.

| As humans , we understand immediately the concept of fat storage being a way of surviving famine conditions. We notice our pets are getting heavy, and have no trouble at all reducing their intake, and therefore their weight. Unfortunately, it's more difficult when it comes to reducing our own weight. We know how to do it , but we fnd ourselves locked in a battle of wills with our own selves. We have a complex relationship with food, and are influenced by so many variables that it's hard to figure out what our own problem is. A lot of the struggle is a mental one. |
